Here is a response I wrote to Marianne Qvortrup Fibiger’s podcast for the http://www.religiousstudiesproject.com on Amma the “Hugging” Guru, a transnational “guru” or teacher figure that has inspired a transnational, diverse set of devotees with her service (seva)-oriented philosophy. I have included the original podcast as well as Dr. Amanda J. Lucia’s response. Dr. Lucia’s first monograph Reflections of Amma: Devotees in a Global Embrace (2014) explores Amma’s global appeal and diverse range of devotees.
